Why are you building HealthMC?

I get that question a lot. While the stock answer is that LLMs are a tremendous leap forward from Traditional NLP, that doesn’t feel like it does the story justice.

Instead, what I often come back to are content snippets like this one:

First, a Useful Analogy: Phrasebook vs. Interpreter

Traditional NLP is like flipping through a medical phrasebook - it works best if the doctor uses the exact words in the exact order. Any deviations from that need to be handled distinctly to surface the right phrase.

With abbreviations, fragmentations, overlapping meanings, negations, and more, these exceptions are actually the rule.

Generative AI is a live interpreter - it natively understands the basics of language and incorporates context without extra training. It listens to the whole story, deciphers slang, and keeps all the relevant information straight. There are no exceptions, it’s all just language.

Clinical Language Is One Exception After Another so where the phrasebook struggles, the interpreter shines:

• MS - Is this Multiple Sclerosis, Morphine Sulfate, or Mitral Stenosis? Or even just the state of Mississippi?

• Discharge was noted - Are we talking about hospital discharge or bodily discharge?

• Patient on beta-blockers. Considering stopping. - Is it the patient considering stopping taking their medication, or the physician considering stopping prescribing it for the patient?

In each of these examples, you need the context to interpret the phrase. GenAI can handle this; NLP cannot.
